Waxing is
quite a popular hair removal technique. As Reshma Monteiro,
proprietor of Perfect
Shape Threading Salon, explains, ‘Waxing is an easy method
for hair removal. It is painless and quick. A thin coat of
hot wax is spread over hair removal area and as it cools, the
surface is peeled using strips of cloth.’ This ensures
that all hair, long, thick or tiny, is caught in the wax and
removed from the follicle. A good beautician ensures that this
is done with practiced ease and as painlessly as possible.
What is waxing?
Waxing as a hair removal method is widely
used in countries like Brazil. A good wax is made of bees’ wax
and soothing natural oils. Some synthetic waxes are also
available in the
market. Performed using both cold and hot varieties, waxing can be used for sensitive areas like the face, underarms and
the pubis as well as hands and legs and in fact the entire
body. Some people believe that cold wax, though easy to use
straight from the bottle, is not as effective as hot wax applied
by a trained beautician.
At Perfect Shape, we first prepare the area to be waxed by
removing any trace of oil or moisturizer. Then we sprinkle
talcum powder so that the skin does not get pulled when wax
is applied. Then we heat the wax to the optimum temperature
and a trained hand applies it on the area to be waxed. Blowing
gently on the skin, the beautician ensures it does not feel
too hot on your skin. Then she places and smoothens a strip
of cloth or paper on the area of hair growth. With a gentle
but firm tug in the opposite direction of hair growth, she
waxes the hair off.
How is waxing different from sugaring?
The sugaring method of hair
removal is very similar to waxing.
The difference is in the mix applied on areas of hair growth.
A sugaring mix is made of sugar, lemon juice, honey or molasses.
This does not stick to the skin unlike wax that does tend to
stick to the skin. Therefore it is easier to remove it after
hair removal. Sugaring pastes are completely natural and do
not contain any harmful ingredients.
What are the benefits of waxing/sugaring?
With waxing/ sugaring, all body hair is removed successfully
even on uneven skin surfaces. Usually hair is of varying lengths
and textures. Waxing ensures that the hair removal is complete
and effective. Secondly, dead skin cells are removed with waxing.
So your skin is cleaned up naturally and starts to glow. Thirdly,
the hair is removed from the follicles unlike with chemical
depilation where only the top layer is removed. So it does
not grow back quickly. With waxing, you can be hair free for
two to eight weeks. Also it grows back fine, light and much
more sparse than what it was before. In fact, after repeated
waxing, hair re-growth is much slower and almost negligible.
Since one full area of the body is tackled at a time, waxing and sugaring cause far less discomfort that removing each hair
individually with threading or tweezing. If you are still unsure,
you are very welcome to observe our trained beauticians at

can be waxed but if you have specific requests, trained beauticians

do not advise you to wax areas with very little hair growth
like palms of hands and soles of feet as waxing may stimulate
hair growth. Reshma also advises, ‘Sensitive areas like
inside the nose, ears and eyelashes are not suitable for waxing.’
Is waxing/sugaring suitable for everyone?
Waxing or sugaring is good for most people. However, those
who suffer from diabetes, varicose veins or circulation problems
may not be the best candidates for waxing as they are more
infection-prone. Also, if you are on medications like Retin-A,
Differin or Isotretinoin, your skin may be too thin to withstand
the waxing procedure. At Perfect Shape, we avoid applying wax
to peeling, broken or sun burnt skin. We also do not advise
those who have had a breakout, rash or pimples to go for waxing.
What is bikini/ Brazilian waxing?
Bikini wax removes hair from the pubic region effectively.
If you are getting ready for your honeymoon or a beach holiday,
you may want to get this done. Trained beauticians at Perfect
Shape perform this hair removal procedure carefully, ensuring
complete privacy at all times. Hairless pubic areas not only
look clean but couples also find it more erotic. Waxing the
pubis may be painful considering the sensitivity of the area
but many people prefer to do it on a regular basis for hygiene
and aesthetic reasons.
Brazilian wax removes hair from the front and back, including
labial lips and butt. Sometimes beauticians may leave a pattern,
strip or thatch of hair to further enhance its visual appeal.
You can then flaunt your thongs with complete confidence!

Tip – Reshma
Monteiro suggests a simple tip to ease the redness after
waxing-
After waxing, gently apply a simple solution
of baby oil and astringent. This will help reduce redness
and remove any remaining wax without you needing to rub
an already sensitive area to clean it up.
